Use Honey To Keep Life Sweet

17 Jun

Whenever I need to sweeten something up, my go to natural ingredient is honey. Not only does it make anything taste better, but it also has a ton of other practical uses. Below are some honey-based cures for a variety of ailments. Try at your own risk.
Arthritis is one disease that can be cured with honey.  One part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and a teaspoon of cinnamon will make a paste that will noticeably reduce pain in a matter of a couple of minutes.  Patients suffering from arthritis can take one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and a teaspoon of cinnamon once in the morning and again in the evening.  Taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured.  Copenhagen University tested their theory by giving patients a mixture of one tablespoon of honey and one half teaspoon of cinnamon before breakfast.  The results were that within a week, 73 patients out of 200 were relieved of pain and within a month, arthritis patients could again walk without pain.
Cholesterol is said to be treatable with honey.  Mix two tablespoons of honey and three tablespoons of cinnamon in 16 ounces of tea.  This mixture is said to reduce the level of cholesterol by 10 percent within a short amount of time.  As with arthritis, it is said that pure honey taken with food daily will reduce cholesterol levels.  Along the same lines, using cinnamon and honey on bread and eaten at breakfast revitalized the arteries and veins leading to the heart and was helpful towards preventing heart attacks.
A mixture of hot olive oil, one tablespoon of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon made into a paste can help baldness and hair loss.  Apply the paste before your shower and leave it on for approximately five to fifteen minutes then wash the hair.
In India and Japan, honey and cinnamon is said to help relieve gas, stomach aches and stomach ulcers. If honey and cinnamon are taken before eating it helps digest even the heaviest of meals.
Colds can be treated with honey.  One tablespoon honey with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon taken daily is said to cure most chronic coughs and clear the sinuses. You can also make up a mixture of honey, whiskey and lemon juice.  If it doesn’t clear your cough, at least you’ll get a nice buzz :-)
Pimples, the curse for both young and old, can be removed within two weeks if this remedy is applied.  Make a paste of three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon.  Put on  before going to bed and wash it off the next morning.
Now here’s the big one: Weight loss. Twice daily, once at night, and once in the morning  drink a cup of boiled hot water with honey and cinnamon. It has been said that drinking this mixture doesn’t allow the fat to accumulate in the body (hey…anything is possible).

Surge In Paleo Diet Popularity Inspires Cookbook Innovation

13 Apr

PaleoCookBook

PaleoCookbooks

The following press release is from our good friend Nikki at PaleoCookBook.com:

The Paleo Cookbook series has been a smash hit with healthy eaters worldwide. And with Paleo Diet popularity growing rapidly, Nikki Young has revised her Paleo Cookbooks to deliver Paleo cooking in a far more flexible, accessible, simple and enjoyable manner. Accompanied by a host of free goodies, these latest editions feature a faster download speed, efficient food category referencing, print friendly pages and both Celsius and Fahrenheit cooking instructions.

Two years ago Paleo revolutionary Nikki Young had foodies hurriedly retracting their “Paleo lacks variety” statements. Nikki’s Paleo Diet cookbook series took Paleo cuisine beyond variety and up to the heights of flexible, efficient and darn right delicious. Fast forward to 2010 and Nikki is back with an updated edition of the Paleo Cookbook series making the Paleo Diet more accessible than ever before.

Eating healthily used to sound like a chore, visions of chewing celery, crunching sunflower seeds and feeling constantly hungry were enough to put even the most health conscious person off their soya milk. But things have changed, not only in the Paleo cooking world but in the mind of the everyday person. Obesity, high blood pressure, an increase in heart attacks and general decline in health has made us all very conscious of what passes our lips.

In the words of Nikki Young, “there is a reason you have never seen a picture of a fat caveman.” That reason is Paleo. By following the diet of our hunter-gatherer ancestors we can live longer, live healthier, live happier, and now thanks to Nikki enjoy our food. With over 150 recipes per book, 8 food categories and user friendly cooking directions, Paleo cooking is the only weapon of choice in a war on illness and consistent visits to the doctor.

Nikki has made a number of improvements since the first Paleo cookbook editions. The first of these improvements is a faster download speed for those with smaller bandwidth. The second is the convenient referencing of metric conversions – something that shall please both sides of the Atlantic. Other improvements include better design application for print friendly pages so you can carry your recipes into the kitchen or stick them on the fridge.

If this wasn’t incentive enough, Nikki is throwing in a free 30 day Paleo Diet meal plan and the First Edition Paleo Cookbooks at no additional cost! One distinct advantage digital cookbooks have over their physical counterparts is the sheer value added content, not to mention that you don’t have to travel to a book store or wait for delivery.

The beauty of ‘Paleo Eating for Modern People’ and ‘Recipes for the 21st Century Hunter Gatherer’ is the lack of sacrifice one is forced to make. Conventional diets always appear so boring and bland, yet the Paleo Cookbooks turn on the taste buds with creativity and variety. Whether Meatballs with Roast Fennel and Basil, Moroccan Lamb infused with Citrus Fruits, Chicken Noodle Soup or Pistachio Salsa, there is never a boring day in the kitchen. Furthermore, if you like deserts and fear forsaking your cakes and sweet snacks, think again; Coconut Chocolate Snacks and Basil and Lime Sorbet will put play to your cravings.

A Paleo diet increases energy and sex drive, reduces spots, produces sustainable weight loss, improves your immune system and helps you live longer. With a different recipe for everyday of the week, the Paleo Cookbooks have transformed healthy eating from a nice thought into a reality.

Dinner Tonight: Chicken Sausage and Broccoli

1 Apr

Chicken Sausage and Broccoli

Chicken Sausage and Broccoli

A quick shot of tonight’s dinner. Roaster Red Pepper and Spinach Chicken Sausage with Broccoli. Since I’ve transitioned to the paleo diet, I’ve probably eaten more chicken sausage than any other protein. The reason is simple: it is super easy to prepare.

The majority of chicken sausage found in stores is pre-cooked, and come in a number of varieties. Cut a few links into pieces, toss in a pan with some oil and you’re good to go. High in protein, low in carbs, tasty and easy to prepare. A paleo winner in my book.

Have Others Cook For You: Talapia and Cantaloupe

30 Mar

Talapia and Cantaloupe

Talapia and Cantaloupe

What’s better than whipping up a delicious paleo meal? Having someone else whip it up for you! I stopped by my aunt and uncle’s crib in Annapolis yesterday. As usual, as soon as I walked in I was treated to a nice hot meal. As I walked into the kitchen, my aunt pulled out of the oven a tray of seasoned talapia (Omega-3s in da house!!!). She then proceeded to cut up a cantaloupe. Combine the two and voila….a tasty, protein-packed plate of paleoness. The fish was perfectly seasoned, and tasted so good I swore it must have been fresh caught. Much to my surprise, my aunt walked over to the freezer and produced a bag of frozen talapia filets. She had bought them at Sam’s Club, which like Costco, specializes in selling products in bulk. So with the right cooking touch, and a little seasoning know-how, you can have tasty good-for-you fish that can be made at a moment’s notice.

The slight saltiness of the fish was nicely balanced out by the sweetness of the cantaloupe. Cantaloupe has long been one of my favorites fruits, often making a great dessert. The idea of combining it with a fish filet to make a lunch meal had never crossed my mind. This is one great benefit of going to other people ‘s homes and having them cook for you: you can get exposed to food combinations you never would have thought of yourself.

If you are on the paleo diet and you have friends or family that cook, don’t be afraid to tell them what you can and can not eat. Just give them the basic info, and let them create something. Just because you are on the paleo diet doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying social get togethers. You might be surprised at what new tasty creations you find.

Today’s Paleo Breakfast: Turkey Burger with Eggs and Apple

15 Feb

Paleo Breakfast: It's not pretty...but it gets the job done.

Paleo Breakfast: It's not pretty...but it gets the job done.

No one said food had to look good to taste good. This morning I was in a bit of a rush, and I knew I was running low on food (I will probably do a grocery shop later today). I took a look in my kitchen and did a quick survey of what I could throw together for a quick paleo breakfast. I looked in the freezer, 1 turkey burger left. I looked in the fridge, 1 egg left (omega-3 infused of course). Don’t ask me why I only had 1 egg…just go with it. Time to go to work:

  1. Heat non-stick pan on med-hi heat
  2. Throw in turkey burger
  3. Heat 5 minutes on both sides…plop on plate
  4. Reduce heat to low
  5. Crack egg into pan
  6. Cook egg to your liking
  7. Scoop egg on top of turkey burger
  8. Add a few squirts of Frank’s Red Hot
  9. Garnish with organic red apple

Badabing badaboom. Paleo breakfast.

Paleo Breakfast Smoothie

10 Feb

Paleo Smoothie

A paleo smoothie could be just what you need

Like many others, I’m sure, I have found one of the hardest parts of the paleo diet to be breakfast. I love bacon/sausage/turkey burgers with eggs as much as the next guy; but I can only eat that so many days in a row. Part of the problem is that I am fighting 26 years worth of habit. I have become conditioned to expect a certain level of sweetness in my breakfast. Lets recap what breakfast has consisted of for my last 26 years:

  • Cereal
  • Pancakes
  • Waffles
  • Bagels
  • Eggs/Omelets
  • Pop Tarts

Not much on that list is paleo. In fact the only thing that is are the eggs. The truth is, when I wake up in the morning I don’t want a big piece of meat with vegetables. I want something sweet or salty or buttery. This is where smoothies come in. Smoothies are a great way of breaking up the monotony of eggs and meat every morning. The best part of smoothies is that you control what goes in them! You can adjust for taste, macronutrient ratio, etc. With a quality blender and quality ingredients, a paleo smoothie could be just what the doctor ordered.

For the past couple days I have been making the following smoothie. It is delicious and chock full of good stuff like vitamins and minerals. The ingredients are:

That is the base. From this you can add anything you want. Drop in a couple tablespoons of fish oil. Add a scoop of whey or egg protein powder. Like chocolate? Add in some unsweetened cocoa powder, or a square of extra dark chocolate (the darker the better). The point is that a paleo breakfast smoothie is flexible. It will bend to your will. So if you are hitting a wall with your paleo breakfast, get out the blender and whip up something delicious.

Day 1

11 Nov

My first paleo breakfast!

My first paleo breakfast!

So I’m on page 65 out of 212 in The Paleo Diet. Though I initially was going to read through the whole book and start fresh next Monday, I instead decided to throw caution to the wind and begin today.

My 3 meals for the day have been the following:

Breakfast

  • 3 omega-3 infused eggs
  • 3 strips of nitrate-free uncured bacon
  • 4 Organic cherry tomatoes
  • 1 organic red apple

Lunch

  • Bison meatballs (1 lb organic bison mixed with orgeno, red pepper flakes, black pepper)
  • Steamed broccoli

Dinner

  • Mahi Mahi filet
  • 1/4 cup of walnuts

Over the course of the day I would snack on green organic grapes.

For dessert, I threw together what I think is considered a paleo ice cream:

  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 2 cups frozen blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extra
  • Handful of walnuts

I just put everything in the blender, poured into 3 small coffee mugs, and threw in the freezer.

Overall breakfast through lunch was pretty easy. By the end of the day, however, I found my sweet tooth to really kick in. One of my goals is to come up with some more recipes for paleo-friendly sweets :-)
