Paleo Breakfast Smoothie

Like many others, I’m sure, I have found one of the hardest parts of the paleo diet to be breakfast. I love bacon/sausage/turkey burgers with eggs as much as the next guy; but I can only eat that so many days in a row. Part of the problem is that I am fighting 26 years worth of habit. I have become conditioned to expect a certain level of sweetness in my breakfast. Lets recap what breakfast has consisted of for my last 26 years:
- Cereal
- Pancakes
- Waffles
- Bagels
- Eggs/Omelets
- Pop Tarts
Not much on that list is paleo. In fact the only thing that is are the eggs. The truth is, when I wake up in the morning I don’t want a big piece of meat with vegetables. I want something sweet or salty or buttery. This is where smoothies come in. Smoothies are a great way of breaking up the monotony of eggs and meat every morning. The best part of smoothies is that you control what goes in them! You can adjust for taste, macronutrient ratio, etc. With a quality blender and quality ingredients, a paleo smoothie could be just what the doctor ordered.
For the past couple days I have been making the following smoothie. It is delicious and chock full of good stuff like vitamins and minerals. The ingredients are:
- 1/4 cup of coconut milk
- 1/4 cup of Bolt House Green Goodness (this stuff rocks!)
- 2 tablespoons Almond Butter
- 1 cup frozen fruit (I’ve been using wild blueberries)
- 1 tablespoon milled flax seed (remember to always using ground, not whole, flax seeds)
That is the base. From this you can add anything you want. Drop in a couple tablespoons of fish oil. Add a scoop of whey or egg protein powder. Like chocolate? Add in some unsweetened cocoa powder, or a square of extra dark chocolate (the darker the better). The point is that a paleo breakfast smoothie is flexible. It will bend to your will. So if you are hitting a wall with your paleo breakfast, get out the blender and whip up something delicious.
